Preaching does not happen in a vacuum. Every sermon is shaped by culture, history, community, and context. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, faithful ministry requires more than theological knowledge—it calls for cultural humility, deep listening, and the ability to proclaim the Gospel with wisdom across diverse communities.
Preaching Across Cultures and Religions: A Cross-Cultural Homiletics Immersion is an immersive educational experience designed for seminary students, recent graduates, clergy, and ministry leaders who desire to deepen their understanding of preaching within a global and religiously diverse context. Hosted in the vibrant state of Kerala, India, participants will move beyond the classroom and into meaningful encounters with Christian communities, neighboring faith traditions, local ministry leaders, and organizations serving some of society's most vulnerable populations.
Throughout the immersion, participants will engage in guided theological reflection, contextual preaching conversations, visits to churches, temples, and mosques, dialogue with religious and community leaders, and shared meals with local hosts. Learning extends beyond lectures through observation, conversation, journaling, worship, and daily reflection, allowing participants to integrate academic study with lived experience.
Kerala provides a remarkable setting for this work. Home to one of the world's oldest Christian communities, alongside vibrant Hindu and Muslim traditions, the region offers a unique opportunity to explore how faith is lived, practiced, and proclaimed within a richly diverse religious landscape. Participants will also experience Kerala's renowned hospitality, cultural heritage, breathtaking natural beauty, and longstanding commitment to education and community life.
This immersion is intentionally limited to eight participants, creating a collaborative learning environment where meaningful relationships, thoughtful discussion, and individual mentoring can flourish. More than a trip, it is an opportunity to cultivate the wisdom, humility, and contextual awareness essential for faithful ministry in an increasingly interconnected world.
