Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sarayu Sojourns?

Sarayu Sojourns is an educational travel organization that designs immersive cross-cultural learning experiences for seminary students, clergy, ministry leaders, scholars, and lifelong learners. Our journeys integrate education, spiritual formation, intercultural engagement, and reflective practice to cultivate compassionate, globally minded leadership.

What makes Sarayu Sojourns different from a tour or mission trip?

Our experiences are designed as educational immersions rather than traditional tours or mission trips. Participants engage in intentional learning alongside local communities through dialogue, reflection, cultural exchange, and shared experiences. We emphasize mutual learning, respectful partnership, and thoughtful engagement rather than observation or short-term service alone.

Who can participate in a Sarayu Sojourns experience?

Each journey has its own intended audience. Many of our programs are designed for seminary students, recent graduates, clergy, ministry leaders, theological educators, and others seeking meaningful cross-cultural learning. Individual journey pages will outline specific eligibility requirements.

Do I have to be affiliated with a particular denomination?

No. Sarayu Sojourns welcomes participants from a variety of Christian traditions and educational backgrounds. While many of our programs are rooted in theological education and Christian spiritual formation, we value ecumenical learning and respectful dialogue across traditions.

Are your journeys only for people in ministry?

Not necessarily. While many of our experiences are designed with ministry leaders in mind, future journeys may welcome educators, nonprofit leaders, students, artists, photographers, and others who value intercultural learning and thoughtful global engagement.

Where does Sarayu Sojourns travel?

Our inaugural journey is based in Kerala, India, where Sarayu Sojourns was founded. As we grow, we anticipate offering additional educational immersions, pilgrimages, and cross-cultural learning experiences in other regions of the world through trusted local partnerships.

What is included in the program fee?

Each journey includes different amenities and educational experiences. Individual program pages provide detailed information about what is included, what is not included, payment schedules, and travel expectations.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. Payment plans are available for most Sarayu Sojourns programs. Details for each journey are provided on the individual program page and in participant materials after acceptance.

Are scholarships available?

At this time, Sarayu Sojourns does not offer scholarships. We encourage participants to explore funding opportunities through seminaries, denominational bodies, churches, employers, or educational institutions that support cross-cultural learning and professional development.

How are participants selected?

Some journeys have limited enrollment to encourage meaningful learning and community. Applications are reviewed to ensure participants are a good fit for the educational goals of the program and are prepared to engage respectfully in intercultural experiences.

How physically demanding are your journeys?

Activity levels vary by program. Individual journey pages will provide information about walking, climate, accessibility, and other physical considerations so participants can determine whether a particular experience is right for them.

How do I apply?

Visit our Upcoming Journeys page to learn more about current offerings. Each journey includes its own application process, important dates, and participant information. We encourage early applications, as many of our cohorts are intentionally small.
